What is Portability (porting)?

The Section 8 Housing Voucher Program contains
provisions wherein a Section 8 Participant may transfer from one
jurisdiction or City to another jurisdiction, i.e., transfer from the
Brevard County Section 8 Program to the Orlando Housing Authority Section
8 Program. This transfer to another jurisdiction is called “port,
portable family or porting.”Who is the Initial Housing
Authority (IHA)?
The Initial Housing Authority is the one who
is administering your Section 8 assistance, i.e., issued you the Section 8
voucher.
Who is the Participant?
In the Section
8 Program, the person whose rent is paid by the Section 8 Voucher is called
the Participant.
Who determines participant eligibility?
We are not to determine the eligibility of the portable family. They
have been determined eligible by the Initial Housing Agency.
Will you provide a translator for Non-English speaking participants?
A Spanish language translator will be provided if requested in
advance.
Are children allowed at the briefing or appointment?
Because
of limited space, childcare cannot be
provided, please do not bring children.
When are inspections scheduled?
An inspection of the dwelling unit must be complete
prior to final approval. Due to a high volume of families porting to the
Orlando area, inspections can take approximately 7 to 14 business days. The inspection will be scheduled after
you turn in the completed “Request for Tenancy” packet.
What are the Payment Standards?
The Payment Standard is the maximum amount the Orlando
Housing Authority will pay a landlord for you to lease a unit. For example,
we will pay $___ for a one-bedroom unit, $___ for a two bedroom unit,
etc. The Orlando Housing Authority has two Payment Standards. We will
give you the amount of your voucher when you attend the briefing. For more
